Waste to Worth: Repurposing Expired Cosmetics for Sustainability Shutterstock

Fourth-year students from Burapha University International College (BUUIC), majoring in Global Business Communication and Modern Media, successfully organized the “Expired Cosmetic” project alongside their advisor, Assistant Prof. Waraporn Theerasak. The initiative focused on collecting expired beauty products and donating them for mortuary makeup, providing a dignified final service while preventing environmental waste. This project directly aligns with SDG 12.2.5 (Policy for minimisation of plastic use) by extending the lifecycle of cosmetic containers and reducing landfill contributions. Furthermore, it supports SDG 12.2.6 (Policy for minimisation of disposable items) by substituting the need for new, single-use supplies with repurposed materials. By transforming potential pollutants into useful resources, the students demonstrated a practical commitment to the circular economy and responsible consumption. This creative approach highlights how academic leadership can effectively address both social needs and global sustainability goals. The project also encourages the community to rethink waste by seeing value in items traditionally considered useless. Ultimately, this student-led effort bridges the gap between environmental policy and compassionate community service.
