International Collaboration Boosts Cultural Competence for Hospitality, Tourism, and MICE Students

On 18th October 2024, an exciting cross-cultural project took place, involving third-year students from the Cultural Diversity Management for HTM course and second-year students from the Service Psychology course. The students collaborated with their peers from Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) in the Netherlands.

This activity was led by Ms. Hataipat Phunpumkaew, an instructor of HTM, and Ms. Hanny Verdellen, an instructor at the Academy for Hotel and Facility at BUas. They have been leading collaborative projects between their institutions since 2020, and each year, the projects have evolved, becoming increasingly dynamic and challenging for the students. Reflecting on the journey from the first collaboration to today, the activities have grown more engaging and provide students with greater opportunities to develop their skills.

This year’s project focused on Geert Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory, with students analyzing cultural differences and discussing the development of cross-cultural awareness. Additionally, they explored the travel motivations of people from various countries. The project brought together students from Austria, France, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Germany, Hungary, Taiwan, and Thailand.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all 26 students from both universities for their dedication and hard work. Their enthusiasm for the project was evident, as they not only enjoyed the process but also significantly developed their cultural competence.

We look forward to future collaborations that continue to challenge and inspire our students, helping them develop the skills to thrive in an increasingly global world.
